Odoo comes in two editions. Community is free and open source. Enterprise is paid per user and adds apps, hosting, upgrades and support. Both share the same core, so the real question is simple: what is missing in Community for your company, and what does it cost to get it?
We build apps for both editions, so we know where the line runs. Everything below was checked against the modules of Odoo 20.

What Odoo Community already does well
Community is not a demo. Many companies run on it for years. It includes:
- CRM, Sales, Purchase and Invoicing, with online payments.
- Inventory and Manufacturing, with bills of materials and work centers.
- Point of Sale, Website, eCommerce, Blog and Live Chat.
- Project and Timesheets, Employees, Time Off, Recruitment and Expenses.
- Email Marketing, Events, Surveys, Maintenance and Fleet.
- Ready-made dashboards, in read-only mode.
What only Odoo Enterprise has
- Accounting: financial reports such as the balance sheet and the profit and loss, assets, budgets and reading vendor bills by OCR.
- Studio, to add fields, views and reports without code.
- Documents, Sign, Knowledge, Approvals and Appointments.
- Helpdesk, Planning (with Field Service since Odoo 20), Subscriptions and Rental.
- Barcode scanning in the warehouse, Shop Floor, PLM and Quality.
- Payroll, Appraisals and Referrals.
- Marketing Automation, Social Marketing and VoIP.
- The IoT box for printers, scales and payment terminals, and the AI agents.
The real cost of each edition
Enterprise is billed per user and per month, with two plans. Standard includes all the apps, hosted by Odoo. Custom adds Studio, several companies, the external API, and hosting on Odoo.sh or on your own server, for close to twice the price. One app alone is free on Odoo Online, with unlimited users. Prices depend on your country and billing period: check them on the official pricing page.
Community has no license fee, but it is not free to run. You pay for the server, its maintenance and backups, and above all the upgrades: Odoo upgrades only Enterprise databases, so moving Community to a new version is work for you or your partner.
You can start with Community and move to Enterprise later: Enterprise is built on top of Community, and your data stays.
Which edition should you choose?
- Community fits if you invoice in Odoo but your accountant keeps the books elsewhere, if you use a few core apps, and if you or a partner can run a server.
- Enterprise fits if you do your accounting in Odoo, need Studio, Helpdesk, Planning or Subscriptions, or want Odoo to handle hosting, upgrades and support.
In between, many companies stay on Community and add a few apps for the features they miss.
Fill the gaps of Community with apps
The Odoo Apps Store has thousands of modules for both editions. Ours all work the same way in Community and Enterprise, and some fill exactly the gaps above:
- KPI Dashboards: build your own dashboards, which Community only shows read-only. See our dashboard guide.
- Direct Print: print reports, labels and POS receipts on local printers without an IoT box. See our POS printer guide.
- Office Preview: open Word, Excel and PowerPoint attachments in the chatter without downloading them.
